New Aging in place accommodation
Design of new accommodation to allow high care but to enable entry at low care level
Issues included – Need to accommodate 108 residents during redevelopment of hostel, need to accommodate further fifty residents in order to gain accommodation bonds for funding., sloping site with limited access, bush, fire hazard adjacent, aggravated neighbours with history of objections to proposals
Solutions included –Resident pods (wings) ranged across the slope, sheltered courtyards formed between the wings, elimination of main circulation from resident areas, planning to allow “back to back” pods to allow staff flexibility and efficiency, simplified layouts to enable resident way-finding, domestic-scaled kitchen servery, dining and lounge area for each pod on each floor, staff overview from serveries, car parking and back of house circulation in basement
