Conversion of three storeyed hostel to dementia care:

Issues included - High staff levels to manage residents over two levels, large common hall for lounging and dining

Solutions included – Replanning to retain residents on each floor, replanning to reduce resident numbers per pod, planning to allow “back to back” pods to allow staff flexibility and efficiency, simplified layouts to enable resident way-finding, domestic-scaled kitchen servery, dining and lounge area for each pod on each floor, staff overview from serveries

Conversion of stand alone dementia care accommodation to mixed uses:

Issues included - Confusing layout for staff as well as for residents with raised stress levels, long circulation paths, for staff which reduced staffing efficiency, lack of vision for staff supervision, isolation from main building with reduced staff efficiency at night and week ends.

Solutions included – Relocation of dementia care to main building, conversion to main entry and administration in central location, addition of medical centre and pharmacy, conversion in part to partners accommodation.
