Residential - Sustainable

Sydney Morning Herald

"The best caves always face the sun" says John Mason, this year's RAIA's Blacket Award winner for ecologically sustainable design. Mason recently demolished the rear of his Federation Willoughby house and reoriented it from west to north, relocating living areas and kitchen to a deck which covers a rainwater tank. A tilted roofline maximses northern sun, while floor to ceiling glass doors allow below floor thermal mass - retained demolition rubble - to heat up by day. The house has a solar hot water system and a Dowmus Biolytic Filter built into the foundations is used for the primary treatment of water, kitchen cuttings and sewerage.
